What Happened When I Wrote and Published a Medium Story Every Day for a Month

Some things I expected, plus some surprises. And I looked at a LOT of stock photos.

Last month — July 2019 — I decided to run an experiment: I would write and publish a story on Medium every single day for a month.

Prior to that, I’d been on a roughly two-stories-a-week pace. I would write a story — a personal essay — when I had the time and inclination. An idea would ambush me; I would either sit down right then and put it together, or make notes for later.

There are writers who make Medium their full-time gig and do very well with it — making a decent or even cushy living at it. They publish here every day, often multiple articles a day. It can be challenging to look at their results and not feel a sense of aspirational envy. Could I do that?

Well, maybe I could, maybe not; but that was not the purpose of my experiment. I don’t have a day job I’m dying to quit, and I don’t dream of writing full-time. I work at home, copyediting and proofreading for clients all over the world, and I love that work. I also write fiction — in fact I’d really better get hopping on that because I have a novel draft due in a month — and I don’t want to give that up either.
