We Are All in This Together

For better AND for worse

Did you know Miata drivers wave at each other when we pass on the road? It’s true, we do. I was driving home from a sweaty game of racquetball down at the gym this evening and passed a little white ragtop Miata, and, as I was in my copper-red hardtop Miata, I waved at the woman driving it. She gave a big smile and waved back.

I don’t know her; even though this is a small island, I may never see her again. (Maybe she doesn’t even live here — who knows? We’ve been known to have a tourist or two around these parts.) But for that moment, we were kin. Members of the Great Concatenation of Mazda Miata Drivers.

It made me feel good, and it made me reflect on the things that link us together. Big deep fundamental things — family, love, politics. External things — where we work, where our interests and passions are.

And random frivolous things, like driving the absolute bestest car ever made.

I fancy myself an introvert, and I do indeed enjoy the company of me, myself, and I. Big groups exhaust me; being asked a bunch of personal questions exhausts me; people who like to make a lot of eye contact exhaust me. (And public speaking pretty near PANICS me.)

And yet — my husband and I leave the day after tomorrow for a writing retreat with a…
