As for certifications and professional groups — well, I didn’t get any certifications myself (as I sort of backed into the profession without consciously intending to), and I’ve never had a client ask about them. It’s possible, I suppose, that potential clients are looking at my website, not seeing any such credentials, and moving on without contacting me. I’m busy enough with referrals that that isn’t an issue for me — so, as for joining professional groups and referring work to one another that way, that sounds like a good idea to me. And more deliberate and forward-thinking than my haphazard approach, which worked for me, albeit slowly.
