Our income was (unusually) low last year — and too low, according to our accountant — to make incorporating cost-effective. But this year, our income is already on a much better pace, so I want to move ahead with that. I’m also looking for a new accountant…if for no other reason that I’d like one closer to home. This one has never seemed like the right one for us, and since we moved here from Portland, Oregon two years ago, it’s feeling like an even worse fit.
And thank you! This is indeed helpful. I hope to write a different article next year about how our tax situation got SO MUCH BETTER! :-) Though this article was prompted not just by our own situation, but (seemingly) everyone we know who has largely 1099 income. Anecdata, true, but it felt striking.
