Though I am often pretty good at disguising this fact, I’m really not very normal.

For example, I grew up on a backwoods hippie commune without (among other things) television. I had to learn about the real world mostly through reading books. I’ve never been able to participate in those conversations about all the shows everyone loved in childhood. Fortunately, at my advanced age (I now qualify for AARP…my goodness), those conversations are less common than they were when I was in high school and college — when it seemed like that was the only way people bonded.

I was one of the first people I knew with access to a computer, though, and with an email address, due to my job at a university; email is rather less interesting when there’s no one else to write to. But despite this early exposure, my actual computer expertise is pretty rudimentary.

Even so, I probably could have figured out how to sign up for, and use, online dating apps. But I never did. Instead…
